Activities - Past & PresentIrondequoit Creek CleanupPicking trash from Irondequoit Creek is not your styrofoam-coffee-cup-and-beer-bottle hunt. Not at all. Veteran trash pickers know that Irondequoit Creek is BIG GAME. Knowing this, you might imagine how dissappointed the crew was when we discovered that no one had, as yet, dumped in more shopping carts to replace the ones we took out of the creek last year. In fact, that part of the creek was remarkably clean. ![]() Undaunted, we pressed upstream from the concrete bridge connecting the back of the Panorama Plaza with Nalgene Corp. Here we found what we were after: shopping carts, old tires, 55 gallon drums - a Grand Slam of Trash Collecting - all partially buried in the tenacious silt of the creek bed. These we removed and arranged in picturesque piles on the stream banks, awaiting removal to the Town of Penfield dump. We couldn't get it all, but we got some, and saved plenty for next year. Trash pickup was followed by lunch at streamside, where Vic Popiwny's Hot Sauce, mingled with just a touch of creek silt, gave the hot dogs an exotic flavor. An informal review of the 1998 trout season was presented, complete with largely unretouched photos. Thanks to the participants: Gleason Cleveland, Bob Cremins, Tom Hargrave, Mike Kester and SERAP friend John Housel with his two sons Nathan and Dan, John McManus, Mike McNulty, Vic Popiwny, Dick Sutton, Joe Verdone, our intrepid leader Chris Webber, and one Unknown Trash Picker whose name we missed. It was very encouraging to see how last year's efforts held up, and how good that stretch of creek looked one year later. Joe Verdone- We had a great 2nd Annual Irondequoit Creek cleanup this year. With a turnout of about 15 dedicated chapter volunteers who were not afraid to get HOT, dirty, and wet, we hauled out quite a load of Penfield's finest junk. While last year's Irondequoit cleanup was the year of the shopping cart, this year's was the the Year of the Tire. We lifted between 20 and 30 tires out of the creek. We also landed 6 or 7 additional shopping carts and other assorted debris. Again this year, we were aided by Pete, one of the Town Of Penfield's finest, and his trusty town truck. It was another great Seth Green Chapter cleanup, and hopefully next year, we'll make it all the way upstream to the 441 bridge. Much thanks to everyone who participated. Chris Webber- |
